Surrey DC (Development Centre)

Welcome to the SDC (Surrey Development Centre) pages of the Surrey Hockey Association. Formerly called the England Hockey DC, the SDC is the first step on the Surrey County Player Pathway after club and school hockey.

The SDC is for committed and enthusiastic players who want to take their hockey to the next level. It is not for beginners. Players nominated by their club or school to the SDC, should have a better than average grasp of the core skills.

Following the SDC, coaches will select those players who the feel are ready, for the Surrey AC (Academy Centre - Surrey County) selections.

We do not provide written feedback for players after the SDC. The reasons for this are explained here. The best feedback is given on the pitch and in the moment, and players are encouraged to attend the SDC with the right mindset and motivated to improve and develop.

Surrey is proud to have a team of great coaches and we use the SDC sessions to further develop existing and new coaching talent. Each SDC centre is led by experienced coaches, min. qualified to Level 2, and our coach development programme and activities engaging with the Surrey clubs, ensure we continue to deliver the best coaching experience for young Surrey hockey players.

U18 Player Eligibility

Surrey Hockey is pleased to confirm that U18 players (born between 01/09/2008 and 31/08/2009) are eligible to apply for either the Development Centre (DC) or the U17 Assessment Day.

This reflects the regulations of the South Areas County Championship, which permit U18 players to participate within U17 squads.

All players will be assessed and selected on merit, and places will be offered where spaces are available within the programme.

U17 & U18 Assessment Options

For U17 and U18 players, the preferred route into the Surrey Player Pathway is via the DC Camps taking place on 24–26 August 2026 at Reed’s School.

However, Surrey recognises that some players may be unable to attend these dates. In such cases, players can instead attend the AC Assessment Day on 13 September 2026 (venue TBC).

While attending the DC Camps is strongly recommended — as it provides players with a more comprehensive training experience and allows coaches to assess performance over a longer period — the Assessment Day offers an alternative opportunity to be considered for selection.

Age groups for the 2026 DC:

Age groups for all Surrey Player Pathway activity is run along academic years. This is in line with school and club hockey, and means that for the 2025/26 DC & AC, players qualify as follows:

* We will take 1 year young players for U13 (Year 7) but may contact the club/school to have a discussion. Unfortunately, there have been too many instances in the past where players a year too young were put forward for DC, but were not ready for it. This isn't good for the player or the centre, so please only nominate year-young players as an exception.

Other participation criteria:

  • Players must live or go to school in Surrey or be members at a Surrey affiliated club.
  • Players can be nominated to more than 1 county but can only participate in the DC of one of them.

Cost of the 2026 DC:

The cost of the Surrey Hockey DC is £120.00 per player. Details on how to make payment will be in the invitation email you get once you have been placed in a centre, and can also be found here.

REGISTERING FOR THE DC - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

2026 SDC Registrations

Registering on the new system for all  players

New players:

If this is your son or daughter's first year in the DC, they will need to be nominated by their club or school. Once you have been made aware that the club/school nominations have been forwarded to us, you can register on the system.

The Surrey Pathway Management System is designed to be the perfect tool to help us manage, track and administer the players in the Surrey Player Pathway. It is solely focused on the Surrey DC (Development Centre) and Surrey AC (Academy Centre) cycles and does not deal with any Talent Centres or Academies, or other aspects of the EH talent system

To register your child, we ask the parent/guardian to first create a profile for themselves after which they can add their child/children as players to that profile. This way there is only 1 parent/guardian log-in even if you have more than 1 child on the system.

If you hit any problems, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we'll get straight on it!

  • To find out how the registration process works and what to expect, please see the FAQs at the bottom of the page.
  • Below the FAQs you can find details of all the venues and dates for the DC to help you decide which is the best centre for you.
  • When you are ready to register for the first time, scroll down until you see the button labelled "NEW PLAYER - Register on the system"

DC FAQs

  • Who can be nominated for the Surrey DC

The DC is not for beginners, it is an opportunity for talented and enthusiastic players to further develop their skills. The training environment will be fast-paced and rigorous and is likely to discourage a player who is not already at a certain standard and ability. We have asked clubs and schools to only nominate players who they feel are ready.

For the same reasons, players can only participate in their respective age groups.

Players currently in the Talent Academy can't be nominated for the DC

  • What age group is my son or daughter for the Surrey DC?

For the 2026 DC, the age groups are as follows:

    U13 - born on or between 01 Sep 2013 - 31 August 2015 (Y7* & 8)

    U14 - born on or between 01 Sep 2012 - 31 August 2013 (Y9)

    U15 - born on or between 01 Sep 2011 - 31 August 2012 (Y10)

    U16 - born on or between 01 Sep 2010 - 31 August 2011 (Y11)

    U17&u18 - born on or between 01 Sep 2008 - 31 August 2010 (Y12)

    * We will take 1 year young players for U13 (Year 7) but may contact the club/school to have a discussion. Unfortunately, there have been too many instances in the past where players a year too young were put forward for DC, but were not ready for it. This isn't good for the player or the centre, so please only nominate year-young players as an exception.

  • What happens at the end of the Surrey DC?

After the DC, the coaches will nominate players for the Academy Centre (AC or County) assessments. This doesn't mean the player has been selected for the AC, but that he/she has been invited to the AC assessments. The best players from all the DC centres will come together and the AC coaches will select a squad of 22-24 field players and 2-3 GKs for each AC age group.

To be nominated for the AC assessments a player MUST attend the DC first.

The AC dates can be found on our AC Pages.

  • Do all players return to the Surrey DC every year?

All players will need to return to the DC if they want to be considered for the next AC cycle.

No exception can be made for current AC players who can't do the following year's DC as a result of other commitments.

Exceptions can be made for players dropped from the TA or players returning from injuriy.

These exceptions are at the discretion of the Player Pathway committee.

  • When are the Surrey AC assessments?

    TBC

  • My son/daughter can't do all the Surrey DC dates, does that matter?

No, although each session will cover certain specific things which will be missed in the event of non-attendance.

Mostly the question we are asked is: "If any sessions are missed, will that affect our chance for being selected for the AC?"

The answer to that is 'maybe'. The coaches do not penalise players who have to miss a session due to other sporting activity or family commitments. However, they can only make a determination about a player based on what they can see at the sessions. If in doubt, a player will generally be invited to the AC assessments to make sure we do not accidently miss out on a talented player.

For more information , please read our Player Attendance Policy.

  • I think I may have missed an email.

All emails are sent using our bespoke Online Player Registration system. A copy of every email is saved on your personal profile.

For a guide on how to make sure emails are not routed to your spam or junk folder, and how to access the emails stored on your profile, visit our Emails to Parents page.

  • Have I paid for the Surrey DC? & Payment status incorrect

    The process is as follows:

    • You apply
    • We assign a centre and send an invitation
    • You accept the invitation
    • You make a bank transfer
    • The treasurer checks the bank and updates the payments.

As soon as you accept the invitation, the system flags your son or daughter as 'NOT PAID'. This will disappear once the treasurer updates the payments. This can take anything from a few days to a couple of weeks so please don't worry about it. The administrator will always ask the treasurer to update the system before reminders are sent. If you get a reminder and believe a mistake has been made, just reply to the email with details of the payment so that we can check what went wrong.

  • Where do I find the registration form/consent form to print for the Surrey DC?

The Consent Form, also sometimes referred to as the Registration Form, can be downloaded from the player panel once you're logged into your profile on the Surrey Player Registration System.

    More details.

  • What is the cost of the Surrey DC?

The cost of the Surrey Hockey DC is £120.00  per player. Details on how to make payment will be in the invitation email you get once you have been placed in a centre, and can also be found here.
